Our Mission

Nurturing the minds of tomorrow together

Our Vision

We aim to nurture pupils, in partnership with their families and communities, to be caring and thoughtful citizens who aspire to be the best they can be in whatever field they choose in the future.

Our history

Ysgol Gymraeg Casnewydd opened its doors on 1st September 1993. This was as a result of over 30 years’ hard work and support of parents and a community who could visualise and appreciate the benefit of a Welsh medium education. The increase of Welsh language education within Newport can be traced back to the first Welsh Unit established in 1972.

September 2002 marked another important milestone with the opening of our purpose built nursery block for children of 3 years and over, thus meeting the ever increasing demand for Welsh medium education in the area. This growth has been mirrored throughout the old county of Gwent and Newport itself.

The success of the school is a testament to the hard work and commitment of all involved. This is reflected in the academic, sporting and cultural success that the school has enjoyed. Highlights in recent years have included National Urdd Eisteddfodau successes on stage as well as in Art and Craft competitions.  Many prizes have been won for our gardens and our use of the outdoors as a teaching tool.  The Rugby and Athletics teams have both had successes in County and Urdd competitions. The school achieves consistently exceptional performances at the end of Key Stages as well as receiving an excellent 2010 ESTYN inspection report. The school will continue to build upon its success and promote the benefits of Welsh medium education.

Pupils are taught through the medium of Welsh rather than being introduced to Welsh as a second language. As teachers, we communicate with pupils through the medium of Welsh at all times, (with the exception of English lessons introduced in Year 3). The progression from the Nursery class to Ysgol Gymraeg Casnewydd is an important and essential element in the children’s education. Currently our pupils transfer to the Welsh medium secondary school in Newport.
